The AG Leventis Biological Sciences building will be a space of scientific excellence and a source of intellectual wealth for the University of Cyprus and our country, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Wednesday as he laid the foundation stone.

The president thanked the AG Leventis Foundation for donating €6 million for the construction of the new building, but also for its previous donation of €6.5 million in 2004 for the Anastasios Leventis building.

“With its generous financial contributions, the Leventis family opens new perspectives of advanced activity for academic staff, researchers and students, while enabling the university to integrate new subjects of education and research in cutting-edge fields,” Anastasiades said.

The university, like all higher education institutions, is valued by the state as the core of social, economic and cultural development, the president said.

It is for these reasons that the state has collaborated with the university’s administration on mutually beneficial synergies, especially through the foundation’s development programme for the period 2016-2026, which includes the construction of Stelios Ioannou library, the renovation of existing buildings, and complete refurbishment of the historic former Paedagogical Academy.

At the same time, Anastasiades added, works are underway for new infrastructure for the Polytechnic school and a cancer research centre, and a second photovoltaic park on the university campus.

He also mentioned the imminent relocation of the Architecture school to the site of Phaneromeni primary school, which is part of the government’s Recovery and Resilience plan.

“I am absolutely certain that the new building will be a space of scientific excellence and a source of intellectual wealth for the university and our country,” the president said.

Quoting foundation head Anastasios P Leventis, he said that “the donation is in line with the desire of the AG Leventis Foundation to encourage education, environmental and research in the biological sciences”.
